Recycling Contracts for State Agencies

School Computer Program

The State Surplus Property Agency initiated its School Computer Program in 1997. The purpose of the program was to convert used computers from state agencies into a source of inexpensive computers for North Carolina public schools and public charter schools. This program not only is an invaluable resource for many public school systems in North Carolina, but also enables state agencies to honor environmental goals to recycle computer equipment instead of disposing items to a landfield.

Agencies are asked to send all their computer equipment to the State Surplus Property Agency Computer Center where it is separated and analyzed for condition and capability. Technicians test the equipment and assist schools in developing systems that will meet their specific needs.
North Carolina public schools or public charter schools can purchase the computers for $25 per system.

The general price of a computer system for an interested public or charter school is as follows:

  • Pentium Computer System (PIV > = 1.8 Ghz): $25.00 including;
  • At least 20 GB Hard Drive (Disk Space)
  • > = 512 MB RAM (Memory)
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Power Cords
